This is a mercury arc rectifier. Two glass bulbs, each with a pool of mercury. AC Electrodes create an arc across the vapour above the mercury and it will only accept current flow in one direction. Direct Current is picked up from the mercury pool. These rectifiers previously ran ex-German U-boat motors at the Royal Opera House, operating the stage hoists! #openhouse

@thelondonlibrary is my favourite place in #london and therefore the planet, but is in need of new members. An emotional night @nationaltheatre when #Rufus popped out before the show to pay tribute to #PeterHall and lead a standing ovation to the man. Show #41 of #2017: #Follies. #StephenSondheim is a genius, absolutely magnificent show with a stellar cast, and I do believe I have something in my eye… #londontheatre #theatre #london
