#NEGLECTED: these trees were pollarded at some point, but the boss just decided that they couldn’t be bothered any more at some point, and here we are. #tree #pollard

BEFOREANDAFTER | Saturday, November 28, 2020

12:49 PM

#BEFOREANDAFTER: when I studied forest ecology as part of my degree, (by far the most interesting module in that half, as it mainly involved us wandering around Keele’s 600-acre woods) we learned that size kills trees rather than age, as the tree is unable to support itself with food and water, so pruning them like so keeps them healthy. Obviously this has been done properly, trees don’t cut their own hair and neither should you. My mate Kevin had the last word on pruning AFAIK, “just trying to make it look more like a tree”. #forestry #pruning #pollarding #coppicing #park #richmond

HIDEOUT | Saturday, November 28, 2020

12:38 PM

#HIDEOUT: on the posh side of #RichmondPark there is a stretch of ungainly and gangly trees folding themselves into a parkour playground of jumps, runs and shelters like this. #trees #park #richmond

#WALKONWATER: the #Thames at shallow tide sees every kid and their dog out on the flats looking for shells. #river #london #sunset #richmond

HOUSEOFFRASER | Sunday, November 15, 2020

6:35 PM

#HOUSEOFFRASER: I used to frequent the Victoria St branch when we lived nearby, because it was reliable and had decent stuff. Buying household stuff in person these days is tricky as we’ve swapped those shops for cafes and chain restaurants, so the few department stores scattered around are very handy. Or were. Sad to see this one go, this is also the first time I’ve seen the #DickensAndJones sign here since I was a teen. The Victoria St branch was an #ArmyAndNavy store, but they’re all redundant now. This one will become some kind of shopping centre, I believe. Hoping @ldncmonkey will open a multi-storey climbing wall here. #departmentstores

AHA | Sunday, November 15, 2020

5:01 PM

#AHA: Finally, an affordable and acceptable way to stash speaker cable! Ultra-flat copper with a sticky back, I’ll smooth it in with a touch of filler and paint the wall at some point. It’s unshielded, like speaker cable generally, sounds great, and €15 for 5m, and €15 for four connectors. Also comes in tracks of four, if I wanted to bi-wire the speakers. Neato. #endlessdiy #hifi #continuousimprovement #kaizen

JALEBI | Saturday, November 14, 2020

1:08 PM

#JALEBI: I harbour a deep dislike for most Indian sweets - they’re denser than tungsten - but there’s a few exceptions. These are made by deep-frying plain flour batter and soaking them in sugar syrup, and the description is enough to kill you, let alone eating a box-full. It’s found across Persian countries, where it basically originated, but only India makes them bright orange and crispy. Your humble correspondent feels that they improve after a few days once the sugar crystallizes and they become a bit softer. #diwali #sweets #type2diabetes

HAPPYDIWALI | Saturday, November 14, 2020

#HAPPYDIWALI: pt. 1. Begins with an early-morning trip to pick up sweets (and snacks), and naturally every customer is buying kilos and kilos, so the queue is deceptive. #diwali #jalebi #sweets
