#NOMADS: I met a a very famous photographer whose style I spent the summer of 2009 ripping-off, and he was photographing many of the same subjects as me. He gave me tons of great advice and one key point was that he thought it very important that I show them on the move. I finally nailed it after many weeks. The men have already left with the cattle, the women pack up camp and travel to the next site, literally carrying their beds. #tribes #gujarat #india #photojournalism

#TRIBES: Remember Rajini? I do. She would be 18 by now, I would like to know what happened. #india #gujarat #photojournalism

CHILDLINE | Wednesday, March 31, 2021

1:17 AM

#CHILDLINE: this is the makeshift office of childline at #ahmedabad stations, staffed by runaways who are attuned to children on their own on the trains. This is from the documentary I couldn’t make, but there’s an amazing community of young people and kids with stories of abuse too harrowing to remember let alone retell right now. #childabuse #india #railways #runaway

#TRIBES: several decades ago I made the fairly trite observation to my cousin that #India would never get anywhere until it addressed equality between men and women. We could clearly see that the practice of female infanticide would only lead to a problematic male-female ratio. And here we are, with one single woman somehow wangling her way into the community meeting, kinda illustrating that point. And many other points. #nomads #sexism #photojournalism

#TRIBES: all the wonderful people in my pictures on this project were helpful, open and usually talkative. They’re all very aware of how the system has been stacked against them and appreciative of the work done by groups like #VSSM to get them their rights back. #india #nomads #gujarat #photojournalism #women

#TRIBES: I find myself in #Okha on 16 July 2009, quite far west in #India, letting the world come to me. I miss the colour. Happy #Holi everyone. #photojournalism

#TRIBES: I envy my musician friends who have been able to carry on creating during the pandemic, I’ve got nothing new. Well, not really. What I do have is a different way of looking at things than I did 12 years ago, so I’m pulling out pictures that were never shown, or appeal to me now, or have stuck in my mind. The technology is better so they’re getting re-graded from RAW, and I hope you enjoy them. I wonder what has become of all the subjects. #india #nomadic #tribes #gujarat #photojournalism

VELVIA | Saturday, October 31, 2020

9:51 PM

#VELVIA: before the 2005 trip to #India, I was there in 2001, and still shooting film. Contax for B+W, Nikon for colour, and I think every photographer of that era must miss #Fuji Velvia. This is a straight high-res scan I found in the archives, and I’d hoped I’d see this image again someday. There’s some places you just can’t reach with a digital camera. #flowers #filmphotography
