BYEBYEBOOKSHOP | Monday, October 16, 2023

#BYEBYEBOOKSHOP: I came back to #Twickenham to finally see that Tony’s bookshop is no more, and I was glad to catch him briefly while he was clearing it out. I knew he was selling up to get his affairs in order, but still sad to see that it has turned into - sorry Beauty Zone - an unironically ugly eyesore of a shopfront. (Trigger warning on picture 2: carbuncle)

WALKIES | Tuesday, September 26, 2023

#WALKIES: Throwback to 2020, a new pic. Met some neighbours down by Twickenham Riverside - they’ve been together for fifteen years, and the long story is that she came back to him as part of a debt repayment. She prefers buses to trains. #bluegoldmacaw #macaw #neighbours #twickenham #pets #leicaq2

RIP | Saturday, May 27, 2023

10:13 AM

#RIP: just learned that my old neighbour, Jessica Davies, passed away late last year and was followed by one of her sons, so sad. Bumped into her in November 2019 when visiting my late mother, collared her for a chat and a picture as I realized I didn’t have one of her. Still remember her as a much younger woman, when her sons were still teenagers. Will miss you in the neighbourhood, Jess. #twickenham

RWC2019 | Tuesday, July 21, 2020

10:23 PM

#RWC2019: try not to look too #shocked when South Africa beat us. Could have been worse, at least we gave the #AllBlacks a good kicking, less good that it does send #NZ domestic violence through the roof. Nice to be back in #Whitton for the game, though. #rugbyunion #rugby #rugbyworldcup #twickenham #england #pub #leicaq2 #leica

MUM | Tuesday, November 5, 2019

11:33 PM

#MUM: born in Mombasa - in The Colony and Protectorate of Kenya - she has always held a British Passport and that has complicated the idea of immigrants for me. At 81, she’s up and down the stairs all the time, does her own shopping via the buses, and gets a bit lonely if she doesn’t see her grandchild regularly. I’ve considered leaving the country because of Brexit, but I’m in a fighting mood and I’m not leaving her. #mother #family #portrait #leica #twickenham

BOOKSHOP | Saturday, November 2, 2019

10:28 PM

#BOOKSHOP: Tony hasn’t been around in a long time, he’s getting on and comes in maybe once a week. He’s really a dealer in rare books with the luxury of an office that also has a bookshop in the front taking up a tiny bit of space. But I’ve roamed his shelves since I was 11 years old and all my #Thelwell books are from here. If I had the money, I’d buy his place, keep his name above the door and run my office from his. I’m not sure that places like his were ever widespread but I feel lucky to have had a bookshop as a neighbour. Further down the street is the fellow who designed and still makes the original #Stormtrooper helmets. George Lucas hates him. But more on my other neighbours another time. If you’re passing by Tony’s place and he’s in, stop by. You won’t get the chance again, most likely. #books #bookseller #neighbours #twickenham

TWICKENHAM | Saturday, November 2, 2019

1:25 PM

#TWICKENHAM: bumped into my longest-standing neighbour, Jessica, en route to my mum’s after the rugby. Realized I’d never taken her picture. She was born in her parents’ flat around the corner and apart from the year she was married, never been away from this little patch in sixty-nine years. At this moment I was stopping her from picking up some turmeric and salt from the shops. #twickenhamgreen #neighbours #leica #portrait

Bloodgate | Saturday, October 5, 2019

11:02 PM

Cheers @mat_stoker for taking me. The plan was to watch @harlequins batter @officialgloucesterrugby which almost didn’t happen, good work at the end to seal the deal. Though I am still pissed off and embarrassed with my local club cheating with #Bloodgate ten years ago. I grew up here, went to Chase Bridge school next to the stadium and walked to the Stoop from my mum’s house, enjoyed seeing the Quins win but still humiliated by the cheating. I don’t know if I’ll ever wear their colours. Can you ever support cheaters again? 😶 #rugbyunion #twickenham #harlequins
